Big Yarn, Big Hat

Picture
This hat evokes the big hats of the 1970s, especially the rolled-brim version at top right.

It took one skein of Boulder, a jumbo wool-blend yarn from Tahki/Stacy Charles, that weighs in at 200 grams, 4 times the size of an average skein.

The circumference is 24 in./61 cm, and it's 13 in./33 cm tall, a good height for a giant cuff or a turned-up-twice rolled edge.

The stitch pattern is half-double crochet; 1 hdc = 1 in./2.5 cm.

A Rainbow Hat

This rainbow duo was published in Brunswick Accents in 1970.  The worsted yarn is crocheted with a C/2.75 mm hook at 4 sc = 1 in./2.5 cm.  This is a tight gauge (and very small hook) for worsted weight, but it helps to maintain the helmet shape of the hat and the stiffness of the pocketbook.

The colors in the original set are Bright Scarlet, Purple, Royal Blue, Shamrock and Maize.  The pattern notes that a 4-oz. skein of each color is enough to make both the hat and the purse.

Here's my version of the hat, at a slightly looser gauge:

Customized Kufi Hats, While You Wait

At a craft show in December, a man asked if I could shorten a black, crocheted hat that he liked, and if this urban-camo pattern hat with the striped band and buttons was for a man.

The craft show benefits a good cause, so I said yes, I could shorten the hat.  And then I said no, that buttons aren't used much on beanies for men.

First Upcycled Hat of 2015

My resolution for 2015 is to use more upcycled/recycled yarns, and here's my first upcycled hat of the new year.

It combines a marl, taupe color, 100 percent merino wool yarn from Ireland -- that's the recycled one -- with a new yarn, a repurposed Berroco scarf yarn from Italy.  Glee, the scarf yarn, started out as a knitted tube, which I unraveled into a ball of self-striping fingering-weight yarn.

The stitch pattern is back-loop single crochet, and I used a 5.5 mm hook.

Bruised Mannequin

One of my hat mannequins got hurt last week.

He wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary, just looking down from his perch on the mantel as usual, when suddenly the "Waterfire Providence" poster shoved him off!

Just like that.

He bounced onto the stone hearth and landed on the tile floor.  Ouch.

More Green in 2015!

Last year, my New Year's resolution was to put more pom-poms on my hats.

This year, my goal is to use more upcycled yarn.  One of my favorite hats from 2014 was this slouchy, which has random stripes in bright colors of recycled yarn, a ribbed band, and . . . yes, indeedy . . . a pom-pom.
