Someone on Etsy asked me about my Hats by Elvee shop icon: the guy in the cool sunglasses.

He's wearing a hat crocheted in variegated sock yarn, a design that I haven't published yet. It's worked at a slightly looser gauge than normal for sock/fingering yarn -- 20 sts = 4 in./10 cm. Not only does this create a fabric with more drape, but it also means that the hat is quicker to make.

So far, he only appears on my Etsy pages and on my care labels for men's hats. He probably deserves a pattern of his own . . . .

I'll have to add him to The List. . . .

Shades of the Sixties

One of the testers for my patterns used Bernat Blanket -- a super-bulky weight polyester chenille
-- for a hat.

Her hat looked so pretty and velvety that I decided to create a design using this yarn.

The result is Shades of the Sixties, a pillbox-inspired hat. The yarn holds its shape for a more structured hat, which is a bonus. The colors in the sample hats are Carrot Orange and Pixie Pink.

Farewell, Gray Cashmere

This week, I shipped the last of the solid hats that I crocheted in recycled gray cashmere. It's the men's hat in the photo above.

This yarn was dreamy stuff. Definitely worth the hassle of unraveling a sweater, washing the yarn and winding it into balls.

The last hat was simplicity itself. Half double crochet looks really good in cashmere, I think.

An earlier solid gray cashmere hat -- also in hdc -- was short-ish, almost a pillbox, and adorned with a flower. Sweet!

Spa Cloth? Or Dishcloth?

One of my perfectionist friends who's learning to crochet says that she starts out making a spa cloth (posh!), but it winds up being a dishcloth.

There's a lot to be said for having high standards when you make things.

But it's also good for beginners to cut themselves a little slack.

It takes a while to become a lean, mean crocheting machine. With practice, one's stitches become more and more even Patterns no longer leave you scratching your head. And sometimes you don't even bother to use a pattern; you just make it up yourself.

To beginners, I would say, "There's a spa cloth in your future. You'll wrap it around a bar of almond-scented soap and proudly tie it with with a satiny ribbon.

"And your dishcloth looks pretty darn good, too."
