Did I Invent a New Stitch?

I've come up with a flatter, more refined ribbing in crochet, and I'm wondering if it's new or not.

Luckily for me, one of the testers for this pattern (called, appropriately, "Riblet") is someone who knows virtually everything about crochet.  I'm expecting that Donna might even tell me if this stitch already has a name.

For the time being, I'm calling it "Upper Front Post Half Double Crochet" and "Upper Back Post Half Double Crochet."  Or U-FPhdc and U-BPhdc, for short.

Here's a diagram of a U-FPhdc as it's worked:

Basically, you're working around the skinny part of the post (right under the stitch loops), not the usual fat part of the post farther down.

The reverse side of the ribbing, which looks slightly different, is pretty, as well.

Put It in Reverse

My crochet friend Iris says that she's been putting reverse single crochet on nearly everything she makes these days.

She inspired me to finish an upcoming hat design with this lovely stitch.  The hat is a cloche, and the reverse single crochet adds a bit of firmness to the edge.

A Turning Question

A pattern tester for one of my upcoming hat designs
-- Eccentric Concentric, right -- wondered what difference it makes if you join and turn your work vs. working with the right side always facing you.

Well, one thing is that you get a straight joining "seam," which is very apparent in this hat because the color at the beginning of some rounds is not the same as the color at the end of the round.

Another difference is that you get a slightly raised appearance for stitches worked on the wrong-side rounds.

I think the disadvantage is that you need to pay more attention when you're turning between rounds. There's something meditative about working a hat with the right side always facing you, one round after another after another . . . .

Yearning?

About half the time, when I'm typing "y-a-r-n," I type "y-e-a-r-n" instead.

I wonder what that's about?

I've always loved variegated yarns, so I'm really happy about creating a new collection of five hat patterns especially for self-striping and self-patterning yarns.

The beanie and slouchy hats pictured here are part of the collection's first pattern, Spiriferous (for its spiral construction), which is being tested right now on Ravelry.

I have to admit, the testers' hats have been amazing. They make you want to run out and buy some acrylic Red Heart Super Saver in Blacklight (neons and black!) or Bright Mix (eye-popping shades of purple, pink, blue and green!), even if you're a yarn snob.

Which I'm not.  I adore merino, but I also can't resist a skein of Red Heart Super Saver Zebra print -- combined with red, above left -- which is 236 yd. of wild patterning possibilities  . . . .
