The Pattern That Started It All . . .

I have a new Marketplace ad on Ravelry that showcases my very first self-published pattern.

Five years ago, I listed The 5-Square Beanie for sale. The year before, I was happy when two magazines -- Crochet! and Crochet World -- each published one of my hat designs.  But the 5-Square -- or the "box hat," as a friend calls it -- holds a special place in my heart.

On a Ravelry project page for the 5-Square, I wrote, "I have an obsession with self-striping yarn, and I love making little squares with it -- like mini color studies. That’s what inspired this pattern."

The hats shown in this post are a new-ish 5-Square development -- what I call "scrap-happy hats."  In fact, these two cuties are crocheted with yarn unraveled from sweaters.

Now some 60-plus self-published patterns later, it's neat to think back to where it all began.

Shell-y started out as a two-color hat with shell-stitch stripes, but then I wondered what it would look like in a single color.

Very textural!

New Pattern #3: Reggie

Reggie is another new pattern I published last week.

Like many of my designs, it offers both a slouchy and a beanie version.

The main color is a chunky-weight yarn -- here in Loops & Threads Charisma in Charcoal and Wool-Ease Chunky in black.  For my sample hats, I used two strands of worsted weight for the contrast colors, but one strand of chunky would be good, too.

The three-color stripes were inspired by British regimental ribbons, often worn on Panama hats.

Spiro is another pattern I published last week.

It comes in both a slouchy and a beanie version, and includes an optional frilled flower for dramatic adornment.

The multicolor slouchy is crocheted in Noro Silk Garden, the rust beanie in Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Tweed, and the brown slouchy in Lion Brand Amazing.

New Patterns: Introducing Wyder

I published four new patterns last week.

Whew!

It might be almost 100 degrees out here in San Antonio, but I'm almost always immersed in thinking about woolly, winter accessories.  Wyder, shown here, is a prime example: a hat with extra-wide ribbing that can be cuffed a lot for a beanie length, or a little for a slouchy beanie.

The hat in rainbow colors is crocheted in a new-ish yarn by Lion Brand: Color Waves, an acrylic-wool blend.  It's very soft and cozy.

The other two hats are all-wool: Lion Brand Fishermen's Wool in Oak Tweed and Bartlett 2-Ply Wool in Denim.
