Foundation Chain De-mystified

I like this 9mm ergonomic hook by the Crochet Dude, as well as his great mini-class on Craftsy.

I don't work a foundation chain stitch -- in which the beginning chain stitches and the first row are worked at the same time -- very often.

So I usually need a refresher YouTube video before I get started.

Luckily, the other day I signed up for a free mini-class on Craftsy, taught by the Crochet Dude, Drew Emborsky.

Thanks to the Crochet Dude, I think I've got the foundation chain down pat. Drew does an amazing job of explaining this technique, and the video work is stellar. You get extreme close-ups of the stitch as it's being made.

I think the reason he got through to me is that he divides the technique into two distinct steps:
1. how the chain is created,
2. and then how the first row stitch, such as double crochet, is created.

Now I feel a bit more confident that I can branch out into hats made from the bottom up -- starting with a lovely, stretchy foundation chain.

I like to save most my yarn weaving-in to do as I chat with other crocheters/knitters/embroiderers at a weekly needlecrafters group.

As I was working on a pile of hats to finish, a friend at the meeting asked, "Do you have a tam?"

Yes, I did. I happened to have this hat, another yarn-mix hat with the Italian novelty yarn mentioned in my previous post (only in blue and combined with gray mohair this time).

My friend needed a hat to wear on a cruise to Alaska. She bought it on the spot. There's plenty of room for her hair so it won't get mashed down, she said, and the blue matches her coat.

I sell very few hats (in fact, usually none) to people here in San Antonio during the summer. So it was nice to have this yarn-mix hat ready for an Alaskan adventure.
