Following is my version of this hat:
This big-cuffed hat from "Cozy Quartet by Bernat," a 1978 leaflet, is one of four great, vintage designs by the yarn maker -- two crocheted and two knit. It's the quintessential crocheted '70s hat.

What I'm working on now: A couple of versions of these '70s cuffed hats.
I sold the inspiring "Modular Crochet" by Judith Copeland a while back in my Etsy supplies shop, www.ProvisionsbyElvee.etsy.com, but I still have this photo of the cover. The book didn't contain instructions for hats, so I've been on the lookout for vintage patterns, and I've found a couple of them. First up will be a ribbed, big-cuff hat from a '70s Bernat leaflet. I'll post this hat next week. I have another ribbed, big-cuff hat pattern from a 1976 Columbia-Minerva Learn to Crochet pamphlet by Gabriele Knecht. That hat has some top shaping that looks interesting. Finally, I'm working on my own design, which uses the big-cuff idea and adds a crunchy-textured stitch pattern and a refined edging. I find it hard to believe that you're gone. I loved you -- and your gorgeous self-striping colors -- so much. When I went online to order you the other day, I was shocked to find that you'd been discontinued. And that I'd missed the big closeout sales by a couple of months! So sad. So very, very sad.
Patons Moxie, in Racoon here, mimics the real thing in an all-polyester eyelash yarn.
I used my Fishnet Slouchy pattern for this hat, but only working to 8 in./20 cm deep. The stitch pattern lightens up the hat -- thus using less than one skein -- and the faux fur strands fill in the "fishnet." Like many of these non-stretchy novelty yarns, this one needs elastic cording to hold in the bottom edge of the hat. P.S. The alternate (British) spelling of "raccoon" is used in the first sentence. It's from the yarn label. |
